House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) announced she would run for reelection.
“While we have made progress, much more needs to be done to improve people’s lives,” Pelosi said in a video announcement posted to her Twitter account.
She added, “This election is crucial. Nothing less is at stake than our democracy.”
Pelosi explained, “I am running for reelection to Congress and respectfully seek your support. I would be greatly honored by it and grateful for it.”

Pelosi did not say whether she would run for speaker in her announcement. CNN reported in 2018, Pelosi struck a deal with a group of Democrats to guarantee her the votes necessary to become speaker again.
The condition was that she could serve as speaker for no longer than four years.
“Over the summer, I made it clear that I see myself as a bridge to the next generation of leaders, a recognition of my continuing responsibility to mentor and advance new Members into positions of power and responsibility in the House Democratic Caucus,” she said in a statement, as CNN reported.
The Associated Press noted her announcement comes after 29 House Democrats said they would not seek reelection compared to only 13 Republicans.
During an interview with CNN in October 2021, host Jake Tapper asked Pelosi about running again.
“Why would I tell you that now?” Pelosi said.
She added, “Well, probably I would have that conversation with my family first, if you don’t mind.”
Earlier this month, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) shared what he would do if Republicans win the House in the midterms and elect him speaker.
The House minority leader explained he would remove some Democrats from their committee assignments.
“The Democrats have created a new thing where they’re picking and choosing who could be on the committee,” McCarthy said.
He continued, “Never in the history have you had the majority tell the minority who could be on committee.”
