Republican, and grandson of former President George H.W. Bush, Pierce Bush became the first member of his family to lose a Texas race in over 40 years. Bush lost his bid for the Republican nomination.
Despite coming from a long line of successful politicians, receiving an endorsement from the incumbent Rep. Pete Olson, and raising more money than most incumbents in his field, Pierce Bush failed to come out on top of the other candidates.
In Texas’ 22nd Congressional District, Pierce Bush garnered roughly 15% of the votes in the Republican primary, while two other Republicans will be headed to a runoff for the party’s nomination, which will occur on March 26.
Prior to the election, a source familiar with the Bush family said that he suspected Pierce Bush would have little trouble getting the Republican nomination as IJR previously reported. The source also said that at the time the family was “still widely revered” in Texas and especially Houston.
While campaigning, Pierce Bush was vocal about his opposition to the idea of big government.
In an interview with KPRC 2 Houston, Pierce Bush said, “There are real people on the other side of the aisle that are trying to sell an idea that big government can answer all of our country’s problems.”
On #HouNewsmakers Sun morn at 10:30, what's with the Democratic Socialists accusations being tossed at @GOP opponents? @PierceBush says it's not just an expression as he is running for congress to win the 22nd Dist spot. @KPRC2Khambrel @harrisdemocrats https://t.co/G5S6uS6oYv pic.twitter.com/tT54uxpSVz

He also previously called 2020 Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) a “committed socialist.”
The victory by Bernie Sanders in New Hampshire shows he's gaining momentum to become the Democrat party’s nominee in November. The dangerous truth is that Sanders is a committed socialist, too far to the left to compromise with anyone. https://t.co/tyAcC1eOuD

Pierce Bush was also open about his support for President Donald Trump and his policies.
“He’s doing an excellent job for the American people, this congressional district is certainly reaping the benefits of it, and it is his policies and the conservative principles he stands for that I fundamentally believe are the most empowering of ideals,” said Pierce Bush.
George P. Bush, the Texas Land Commissioner and another grandson of George H.W. Bush is the only member of the family that is currently holding public office. Pierce Bush currently serves as the CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) Lone Star, which is the largest BBBS affiliate agency in the country.
