Hegseth Names Musk, Luckey and Gingrich to Lead Pentagon Warfare Study

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth named Elon Musk, Anduril founder Palmer Luckey and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich to help lead Project Meridian, a roughly four-month Pentagon study of technologies for future warfare, from underground battlefields to space. The Pentagon says the effort will focus on identifying and fielding tools, but the appointments have raised conflict-of-interest concerns because Musk and Luckey’s companies hold defense contracts and both are major Republican political donors.

Sen. Tillis Calls Hegseth Vote Biggest Regret

Sen. Thom Tillis says his vote to confirm Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was the biggest regret of his career, and he has urged Hegseth to resign, criticizing him as an actor rather than a capable manager. In his new book and interviews, Tillis also says he should have opposed Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s confirmation, while describing private reservations among Republican colleagues about the current president’s administration.

Musk and Luckey Named to Lead Pentagon Future Warfare Study

Elon Musk’s appointment to co-lead the Pentagon’s Project Meridian has renewed conflict-of-interest concerns because SpaceX and his other companies hold substantial government contracts and could benefit from decisions shaped by the study. Markets have responded positively to the appointment, but some investors warn that renewed government involvement could also bring reputational and stock risks for Musk’s companies.

Hegseth Details Pentagon Religious Affairs Office

At Quantico, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth paired plans to cut general and flag officer positions by 20% with attacks on “woke” policies and the media, and announced a new Office of Religious Affairs to strengthen religious support in the military. The initiative comes amid criticism that a newly shortened list of military religious-affiliation codes excludes atheism; the Air Force says the change standardizes records, while critics say it risks sidelining non-Christian service members.
