Punxsutawney Phil’s Twins Get Weather-Related Names — Sunny, Shadow

PUNXSUTAWNEY, PA - FEBRUARY 02: Groundhog handler John Griffiths holds Punxsutawney Phil, who did not see his shadow, predicting an early or late spring during the 134th annual Groundhog Day festivities on February 2, 2020 in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Groundhog Day is a popular tradition in the United States and Canada. A crowd of upwards of 20,000 people spent a night of revelry awaiting the sunrise and the groundhog's exit from his winter den. If Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow he regards it as an omen of six more weeks of bad weather and returns to his den. Early spring arrives if he does not see his shadow, causing Phil to remain above ground. (Photo by Jeff Swensen/Getty Images)

We should have seen this coming — Punxsutawney Phil’s twins have weather-related names.

The announcement was made on Mother’s Day that the twins are named Sunny and Shadow, per the Associated Press.

Sunny, a female, and Shadow, a male, were born to Phil and his partner, Phyllis, earlier this year. A club member discovered the babies in March. The member was feeding fruit and vegetables to the couple, who lives in a climate-controlled burrow at a local library.

“These kits of his are not replacements, they’re not the heir apparent,” Dan McGinley, vice president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club Inner Circle, said Monday. “Sunny and Shadow will not be part of the ceremony — it’s still Phil’s job. There’s still only one Punxsutawney Phil.”

Each year on Feb. 2, Punxsutawney Phil emerges from Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney Phil, Pennsylvania, to predict if there will be an early spring.

If he sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter.
