Reality television star Spencer Pratt announced on Wednesday that he is running to be the next mayor of Los Angeles, California.

Pratt announced his candidacy at a Palisades protest on the first anniversary of the destructive fires that destroyed his home on Jan. 7. The celebrity has since become highly critical of state Democrats, especially California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, over their handling of the wildfires that destroyed over 6,000 homes and killed 12 people.

“I am running for mayor,” Pratt said. “And let me be clear, this just isn’t a campaign, it is a mission. And we are going to expose the system. WE are going into every dark corner of LA politics and disinfecting this city with our light. And when we are done, LA is going to be camera ready again.”

Pratt’s wife, Heidi Montag, expressed support for her husband’s run, stating that the handling of the fires in January 2025 was “gross negligence,” according to the New York Post.

“They intentionally let us burn before, during and after,” Montag said. ““There was no accountability. It was gross negligence. They let this happen. It wasn’t a natural disaster or something that was unavoidable. It was their fault, and we need the accountability we deserve.”

The reality TV star also secured an endorsement from Special Presidential Envoy Richard Grenell in an X post shortly after his announcement.

“I endorse Specner Pratt for Mayor of Los Angeles and will help raise money for him,” Grenell wrote. “Transparency is what we need. Spencer has the passion and the drive to make positive change for Los Angeles.”

Pratt accused Newsom in an X post on Wednesday of allowing victims of the fires to “kick the can down the road” as his office announced measures to help people rebuild their homes. He said in a separate post that Newsom’s executive actions intend to help his donors and friends rather than his constituents.
