Former CNN political analyst Chris Cillizza listed a number of examples on Wednesday to demonstrate how President Donald Trump delivered a commanding speech on Tuesday.

Trump’s nearly two-hour congressional address included touting his accomplishments and honoring special guests. Cillizza, on his YouTube channel, said Trump made moments that people would want to share and credited the president’s television experience for enabling him to pull off such a strong performance.

“Donald Trump delivered a master class in viral moment-making in his speech to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday night,” Cillizza said. “I thought in terms of a piece of sharable political rhetoric, it was an excellent and very effective speech … Donald Trump is, at heart, a reality TV star and a reality TV producer.”

“That’s his most core work experience prior to coming into the White House, and I think that it showed through in that speech that he gave to Congress,” he continued. “Because time and time again, he created moments, he created drama, he created things that you could share and he did it around issues that are what I would call 80/20 issues — issues where 80% of the public agrees with him, 20% of the public disagrees.”

Cillizza then referenced his notes to provide some examples, starting with Trump discussing 19-year-old Payton McNabb, who received a traumatic brain injury after a biological man spiked a volleyball into her head. McNabb was in the audience for Trump’s speech.

“Biological boys playing girls’ sports is an 80/20 issue, 80% of people — Democrats, Republicans, Independents — do not think biological males should be allowed to play,” Cillizza said. “Now, not many of them do, to be totally honest, but it’s an 80/20 issue.”

Nearly 80% of Americans do not believe that biological males should be enabled to compete in female sports, according to a January New York Times/Ipsos poll.

Cillizza then noted how Trump cited programs that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is cutting, such as making mice transgender.

“Is every one of these programs terrible? No,” he said. “Did the laundry list make it feel like the government is spending money on useless things that support a liberal agenda as opposed to just supporting foreign aid? Yes, that’s an 80/20 issue.”

Next, the former CNN analyst noted that Trump highlighted that individuals over 150 years old are still on the Social Security rolls. He said that although this may not be accurate in terms of these people receiving payments, the majority of Americans will trust Trump and think the government is incompetent.

Moreover, Cillizza said Trump touting the Laken Riley Act was another example of an “extremely popular” issue the president raised during the speech.

“So, this is a young 20-something girl who was murdered by an undocumented immigrant. Trump helped push that. It was the first law he signed into law as president,” he said. “This is extremely popular — 80/20. Democrats even voted for this in the Senate … Laken Riley’s sister and mom were there — very powerful.”

“He did an executive order on a 12-year-old girl who was abducted and murdered by an undocumented immigrant. Her mom was there,” he continued. “He dedicated a nature sanctuary to her via executive order with her name on it that he showed around the crowd. Again, effective TV. He told a kid, who was in the crowd, that he had gotten into the Naval Academy. Right? Again, it’s kind of like Oprah: ‘You get a car, you get a car,’ but it works.”

Cillizza finally noted how the president honored a 13-year-old boy with brain cancer named D.J. Daniel by making him an honorary Secret Service agent.

“All of this was really good television and sharable moments, not just TV, but sharable moments on issues that overwhelmingly, the public is with Donald Trump,” he said.
