Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.) is defending his remarks he delivered at a pro-President Donald Trump rally shortly before angry protesters descended on the U.S. Capitol.

On Tuesday, Brooks released a statement “in response to scurrilous Fake News Media and Socialist Democrat attacks related to his January 6th ‘Save America’ rally speech.”

He wrote, “Let’s be clear, this entire smear campaign is about intimidating, censoring and suppressing the ability of American citizens to fight at the ballot box the efforts of Socialist Democrats to seize control of the United States of America.”

Brooks added, “So that I am unambiguously clear, American citizens’ recourse is at the ballot box (maybe this comment will deter Socialist Democrats and Fake News Media from again shrilly shouting false claims of violence advocacy).”

He cited the book of John in the Bible and comments made by Martin Luther King Jr. as the basis of his argument.

“January 6 was supposed to be a day of great debate on the floors of the House and Senate about voter fraud and election theft that is supposed to propel America to more honest or accurate elections,” Brooks said.

He continued, “Instead, our message was hijacked by people whose illegal breach of the Capitol did a great disservice to our cause and America.”

Brooks made it clear those who violently stormed the Capitol “should be ashamed of themselves” because their attack “destroyed two months of debate and work.”

President Donald Trump also defended his speech at the rally, as IJR previously reported.

“If you read my speech, and many people have done it… it’s been analyzed… People thought that what I said was totally appropriate,” Trump told reporters on Tuesday.

During the “Save America” rally last week, Trump reiterated his false election claims and told his supporters to head to the Capitol to “cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women.”

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced on Tuesday the agency is “looking at significant felony cases tied to sedition and conspiracy,” as IJR previously reported.
