A majority of Democrats want President Joe Biden to drop out of the race.
According to an Associated Press/AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll released on Wednesday, nearly two-thirds of Democrats want Biden to end his re-election bid.
The survey also found that 3 in 10 Democrats are “extremely or very confident that he has the mental capability to serve effectively as president.”
The AP notes the poll was conducted before the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump and, “It’s unclear whether the shooting influenced people’s views of Biden, but the small number of poll interviews completed after the shooting provided no early indication that his prospects improved.”
Additionally, the survey found that about half of Black Democrats say Biden should stay in the race, which is the largest demographic that supports his continued run.
By contrast, 3 in 10 white and Hispanic Democrats say they want him to withdraw.
And 7 in 10 Americans say they want him to drop out.
Biden has refused calls to drop out, saying he would only do so if the “Lord Almighty” told him to.
However, he has softened his stance slightly, saying he would drop out if someone could convince him he would not recover politically and would lose to former President Donald Trump or if he was told he had a medical condition.
The AP says the poll results “sharply undercutting his post-debate claim that ‘average Democrats’ are still with him even if some ‘big names’ are turning on him.”
During an interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Biden claimed, “The American public is not going to move away from me as the average voter.”
