Before dawn on many mornings, drivers in Florida have spotted an unusual sight along the roadside: a lone runner moving steadily forward, an American flag held high as it snaps in the wind.
According to Fox News, that runner is Teag “Pure Joy” McCoy, and his miles-long jogs have turned into a viral symbol of patriotism, perseverance, and personal health.
McCoy is training for an ambitious goal — running a half-marathon in every state in 2026 — while using his runs to send what he says is a simple message of unity.
“I love this country, and I’m trying to spread as much love as possible,” McCoy told “Fox & Friends” on Tuesday.
McCoy said the idea wasn’t born during a race or a workout, but during a quiet moment of reflection. Sitting in the bed of his truck one night, he prayed for direction and clarity about how he could make a positive impact.
“It was a real windy night and I saw that flag waving. I picked her up the next day and I ran for 22 miles and the rest is history,” he said.
Since then, McCoy has logged countless miles with the flag in hand, drawing reactions from people who see him along the way.
According to McCoy, most of those interactions have been overwhelmingly positive.
He said about 90% of the responses he receives are filled with encouragement, smiles, and gratitude.
“I get a lot of people saying, ‘I love you’ and ‘God bless you,’” McCoy said.
But the journey hasn’t been without resistance. McCoy recalled that early on, reactions were far more hostile, with some people shouting insults or showing open contempt as he passed by.
“And that took us a good 10, 20 days to get to that because before that we had a ton of hecklers,” he said, adding that he was cursed at, spit on, and even splashed with water during rainy runs.
Rather than responding in anger, McCoy said he made a deliberate choice to stay focused on his mission.
“We keep on moving forward. We tell them we love them,” he said.
As the new year approaches, McCoy says his message isn’t political — it’s personal. He hopes others will be inspired to take care of their health, reconnect with pride in their country, and find ways to move forward together.
When asked what he would say to Americans heading into the next year, McCoy extended an open invitation.
“Get ready, I’m coming to your town,” he said. “Prioritize your health, grab that flag and become patriotic again, baby. I love y’all.”
