This year’s inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame were announced Sunday night and includes singer Jimmy Buffett, who was never nominated previously.
Buffett, who died in September, is included in a separate, non-voted category for “musical excellence,” per Variety.
“…the Rock Hall’s committee was clearly in a sentimental mood after his death seven months ago,” per the outlet.
Two other never-nominated inductees in this category are MC5 and Dionne Warwick. Norman Whitfield is the fourth inductee in this category.
The main category — the Performer Category — has eight inductees.
They are Mary J. Blige, Cher, Dave Matthews Band, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Kool & The Gang, Ozzy Osbourne and A Tribe Called Quest.
The eight “performer” inductees were selected by a ballot made up of 15 nominees who were announced on Feb. 10.
Cher, a first-time nominee, has previously rebuked going in the Hall of Fame, per the outlet.
“You know what, I wouldn’t be in it now if they gave me a million dollars … I’m never going to change my mind. They can just go you-know-what themselves,” she said in an interview on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” in December.
Other than Cher, Osbourne, Frampton, Foreigner and Kool & the Gang were also first-time nominees.
The seven nominees who did not get in are Mariah Carey, Jane’s Addiction, Sade, Sinead O’Connor, Oasis, Lenny Kravitz and the duo Eric B. and Rakim.
This is the second time for Osbourne to be inducted. His group Black Sabbath was inducted in 2006.
“Voters decided that Osborne’s post-Sabbath career established him as one of rock’s major icons, even apart from his initial round of influence and success as a frontman,” per Variety.
