It seems not even a singing voice as golden as Carrie Underwood’s is safe from Hollywood’s ongoing political tantrums.

Longtime General Hospital actress Nancy Lee Grahn made it clear last week that she was not tuning in to Jimmy Kimmel Live—not because she has an issue with the host, but because she couldn’t bear to see country superstar Carrie Underwood on her screen. The reason? Underwood sang America the Beautiful a cappella at President Donald Trump’s second inauguration last year. Yes, seriously.

“I refuse to even look at @carrieunderwood,” Grahn posted on Threads, announcing her boycott of the episode featuring Underwood and her fellow American Idol judges. When her comments sparked headlines, the 69-year-old soap veteran doubled down, saying she’d just watch Kimmel next week instead.

What made the eight-time Grammy winner’s performance so offensive to Grahn? Apparently, simply participating in a presidential inauguration—one that millions of Americans voted for—was enough to trigger a full-on boycott. Underwood, who has long maintained a stance of keeping politics out of her music, had said at the time that she was “honored” and “humbled” to be part of a “historic event.” For Grahn, that was too much.

To no one’s surprise, Grahn made her reasoning clear by unleashing a venom-filled political rant on Facebook. She blasted Trump, his allies, Fox News, and even ICE agents, referring to them as a “KKKabinet” and “army of terrorists.” Her anger, she said, was so intense that her “teeth hurt.”

This isn’t the first time Grahn has mixed politics with the red carpet. In recent years, she’s made political statements at awards shows, toted protest-themed accessories, and repeatedly used her platform to rail against Republican leaders, the Supreme Court, and anyone who dares to perform for a Republican president—even if it’s just singing a patriotic hymn.

Carrie Underwood, for her part, has stayed silent through the drama, continuing to promote the upcoming American Idol season alongside Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie.

But the real story here isn’t about a soap star throwing shade at a country singer. It’s about the double standard in Hollywood, where preaching “tolerance” only goes one way. While Underwood steers clear of divisive rhetoric and focuses on her music, Grahn’s brand of “resistance” now includes boycotting a talk show over a song.

At a time when celebrities claim to be uniting the country, some seem more focused on punishing those who won’t publicly fall in line with their politics. Carrie Underwood sang America the Beautiful—and for some, that’s apparently unforgivable.
