Stevie Nicks, lead singer of Fleetwood Mac, revealed why they will no longer continue performing together.

In an interview with Vulture, Nicks, 75, spoke about whether the band would tour again following the death of member Christine McVie.

“We did go out on the road and do a year-and-a-half tour with Neil Finn and Mike Campbell. We had a really great time and it was a huge tour. That was there in the realm of possibility,” she shared.

However, Nicks said when McVie died, she felt like she was irreplaceable.

“You just can’t. Without her, what is it? You know what I mean?” she added.

Nick referred to McVie as her “musical soul mate” and her “best friend” whom she “spent more time with than any of my other best friends outside of Fleetwood Mac.”

She continued:

“Christine was my best friend. When I think about Taylor Swift’s song ‘You’re on Your Own, Kid’ and the line ‘you always have been,’ it was like, that was Christine and I. We were on our own in that band. We always were. We protected each other. Who am I going to look over to on the right and have them not be there behind that Hammond organ? When she died, I figured we really can’t go any further with this. There’s no reason to.”

Speaking of McVie’s songs, Nicks called McVie “the pop star.”

“She wrote all those really super pop hits. None of the rest of us could write those songs,” she explained. “What would happen is we’d have to take the songs out like we did when she actually retired for 18 years.”

She added, “We couldn’t re-create those songs. So we became a much more hard-rock band.”

According to McVie’s death certificate obtained by People, she died on Nov. 30, 2022, of a stroke with a secondary cause of death listed as cancer. She was 79 years old.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times following her death, Fleetwood Mac drummer Mick Fleetwood said he couldn’t imagine performing again without McVie.

“I think right now, I truly think the line in the sand has been drawn with the loss of Chris,” he shared. “I’d say we’re done, but then we’ve all said that before. It’s sort of unthinkable right now.”
