Former President Donald Trump said Thursday that the Democratic party has “conned” black voters during a wide-ranging interview on “Fox and Friends.”
Trump, who received 12% support from black voters according to a 2020 CNN exit poll, would get the vote of 26% of black voters in the 2024 election, according to a Fox News poll released Aug. 14. Co-host Lawrence Jones played a video clip of his recent visit to a Chicago barbershop to discuss a variety of political topics with voters, after which Trump said that the black voters who “just wanted safety” were dealing with a “corrupt political system.”
“I like that guy, and I like those people and I watched yesterday as you did it. You are doing fantastically, by the way. I watched yesterday as you did the interviews,” Trump said. “Those are great people. Those are people who just want safety. They don’t want much, he wants to run his barbershop.”

“The people that are getting their hair cut, I was thinking about maybe going there myself, I like the work, maybe they would make my hair look better. I would pay a lot of money for that haircut, they could make my hair look better. Honestly those are great people, those are hard-working people. They are strong, they are tough and they know they are being conned by the Democrats” Trump continued. “You have a corrupt political system in Chicago. Look at the governor, the governor is an incompetent guy. He was thrown out of the family business, Hyatt hotel, I was partners with them years ago on a job in New York. They threw him out of the business.”
Trump also discussed the issue of crime in Chicago, mentioning the mothers of crime victims in the city who appearedearlier on the show.
“I watched the mothers on your show this morning before we went on, so sad. They’ve given up on life,” Trump said. “You have the worst prosecutors. They go after guys like me. They don’t – they go after me because I questioned the elections and things like that. It’s nonsense… if you can’t question an election, we don’t have a country. But, when people get killed, when their children get killed, nothing happens.”
Trump urged for a return of tough-on-crime policies, citing his experience building Trump Tower in Chicago.
“I know the people in Chicago, I know the police because I built the building there. I spent a lot of time building it. It’s a great building, a really great building, and what happened is I got to know a lot of people, including the police,” Trump said. “You have a great police force in Chicago, just like you do in New York, just like you do in Los Angeles. They are not allowed to do their jobs. You have got to let the police do their jobs, number one. Number two, you have to do a policy of stop and frisk. When you see a guy coming down the street and you can – the police know every one of them. They know their middle name. They know where they live. They know every one of them, the local police and they are great. You got to let them do their job.”
