A sudden crash in South Florida has landed golf icon Tiger Woods in jail, just days after he returned to competition.
According to the New York Post, authorities say Woods was arrested Friday afternoon following a car accident in Jupiter Island, Florida.
The incident comes shortly after the 49-year-old made his comeback appearance at TGL earlier in the week, marking a return after back surgery in October.
Woods was taken into custody and booked at the Martin County Jail, where he is expected to remain for eight hours in accordance with Florida law.
According to police, Woods registered a zero on a breathalyzer test but declined to undergo a urinalysis.
Officers at the scene said he appeared to be under the influence of “some type of medication or drug,” though no substances were reportedly found inside the vehicle.
The circumstances surrounding the crash remain unclear.
The arrest quickly drew national attention, including a response from President Donald Trump, who spoke briefly about the situation while arriving in Miami for the Future Investment Initiative Priority Summit.
“I feel so badly. He’s got some difficulty. There was an accident and that’s all I know. Very close friend of mine. He’s an amazing person, amazing man. But some difficulty,” Trump told reporters.
When asked directly whether Woods had been injured in the crash, Trump declined to elaborate.
“I don’t want to talk about it,” he said.
The two have maintained a longstanding friendship over the years. In 2019, Trump awarded Woods the Presidential Medal of Freedom, recognizing his impact on the sport of golf and his career achievements.
The latest development adds uncertainty to Woods’ recent return to the spotlight, which had followed months of recovery from surgery. His appearance at TGL earlier in the week had marked a significant step back into competition.
As of now, officials have not released additional details about the crash or whether further charges could be filed.
