Former Space Force Col. Bree Fram, a transgender military officer booted by President Donald Trump’s January 2025 executive order, announced a run Tuesday as a Democrat for a Northern Virginia House seat.
Fram, a biological male who identifies as female, resigned from the Space Force after being placed on administrative leave in compliance with an order that Trump signed one week into his second term, stating, “A man’s assertion that he is a woman … is not consistent with the humility and selflessness required of a service member.” The ousted colonel is seeking to defeat incumbent Democratic Virginia Rep. James Walkinshaw in a June Democratic House primary.
Fram announced the run on Tuesday in a video posted across social media stating, “Donald Trump fired me not for my performance but because of who I am,” while wearing pink nail polish.
Fram did not immediately respond to a request for comment by the Daily Caller News Foundation.
“I am not running on identity,” Fram, the highest-ranking transgender military official at the time of Trump’s order, claimed in an interview with local news outlet InsideNova. “I’m running on a platform that is about service and character, one that is about protecting strong democracy, including our basic rights particularly freedom of speech, freedom of assembly that are so under threat right now.”
“My experience of being pushed out is driving me to fight for an America that protects everyone’s dignity,” Fram said in an interview with WUSA9. “Every child out there should know that they are safe, seen, and celebrated.”
Fram would become the second transgender member of Congress if elected. Democratic Delaware Rep. Sarah McBride, who like Fram is also a biological male who identifies as female, became the first transgender House lawmaker in January 2025.
During an interview at Fortune Magazine’s Most Powerful Summit in 2023, Fram advocated that “inclusion is a national security imperative.”
