Democratic strategist James Carville warned Monday that the 2024 election illustrated his party’s significant issue with male voters.

Carville told The New York Times in March that having “too many preachy females” was driving men away from the Democratic Party’s declining popularity with male voters, with President-elect Donald Trump subsequently making gains among Hispanic and black men in November. The Democratic strategist, on “Morning Joe,” argued the election results proved his March warning correct and urged Democrats to mitigate their struggles with male voters.

“It was not a landslide, but it was a very troubling election for Democrats,” Carville told host Joe Scarborough. Scarborough asked Carville to “highlight a couple of the troubling things,” prompting the Democratic strategist to discuss the gender issue.

“Back in March, I said that I thought Democratic campaign culture had ‘too many preachy females.’ Well, they all had a conniption. Have you looked at the male vote that we got in November? You know, no one since November has come up and said a thing to me,” he said. “Primarily, we have a large problem with males, and I’m not just talking about white males like you and I. I’m talking about males all across, and we need to address that. And we don’t need to be shouted down by Washington liberal advocacy groups or NPR.”

“We got to say we got a male problem and we need to get to work on it. And I think we can … we lost a lot of ground with males and we don’t need to sweep these things under the rug,” Carville added. “We need to expose them and talk about them and discuss them.”

Trump became the first Republican nominee to secure the majority of the Latino male vote in the 2024 election, garnering 55% support, according to a NBC News exit poll.

Shortly after Trump’s victory, Carville expressed disgust with the large number of Americans who voted for him. The president-elect has received over 77 million votes and just under 50% of the total as of Monday morning, according to the Cook Political Report.

“I’m sure I’ll come up with something to make me feel good again, but right now, today, it’s hard, I’ll be honest with you,” Carville said at the time. “And the hardest thing is that I look across this country, and tens of millions of people fell for this shit, and it’s just, it’s depressing, but I will snap out of it.”

“It’s not hard to say there’ve been plenty of criminals, charlatans, conmen, traitors, scumbags — we’ve had all of that before. But I don’t — we’ve never had remotely — and people embracing and endorsing this is — it’s just, it’s sickening,” he added. “But this guy got 50%, okay? They can make the argument Hitler never got 33. Okay, this is frightening that we would get here, and by the way, in 4% unemployment. Okay, I mean, I’m sorry.”
