Speaking at a cabinet meeting, Trump contrasted his earlier stance with his current frustration. Before the U.S.-Israel military action on Feb. 28, he had said the U.S. would “always” stand by NATO. Now, he sounded less certain.
“At least we were. I don’t know anymore, to be honest with you,” he said.
Trump described the conflict as a kind of loyalty test and said European allies fell short. “They weren’t there,” he said. “So if there’s ever a big one… I don’t think they’re going to be there.”
President Trump blasts NATO, saying the alliance has failed to step up.
He questions its reliability.

He said he had hoped NATO countries would help reopen the Strait of Hormuz, where Iranian attacks had disrupted shipping and energy markets. That support never materialized.
“I’m so disappointed in NATO,” Trump said. “This was a test: you can help us — you don’t have to, but if you don’t do that, we’re going to remember.”
He also pointed to the long-standing U.S. role in defending Europe. “We spent trillions of dollars protecting Europe, protecting the countries of NATO — they weren’t there for us,” he said. “This is small time.”
President Trump has officially lost ALL confidence in NATO, and isn’t sure if we are going to continue with this alliance structure:

Trump’s comments come as tensions grow between Washington and several European leaders, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Trump criticized Starmer for holding back early in the conflict and only offering support after the U.S. had already secured its objectives.
“We don’t need them anymore,” Trump said.
Many NATO countries chose not to take part in the initial strikes on Iran, with some leaders arguing the conflict wasn’t theirs or lacked clear legal grounds. The disagreement has added to existing strains within the alliance and raised new questions about its future.
