The Trump administration is ending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somalia, ordering over 2,400 Somali nationals to leave the U.S. by March 17, including hundreds residing in Minnesota — the state at the epicenter of a $9 billion fraud scandal tied to members of the Somali community.

“Temporary means temporary,” said DHS Secretary Kristi Noem in a sharp statement to Fox News Digital. “Country conditions in Somalia have improved… and allowing Somali nationals to remain… is contrary to our national interests. We are putting Americans first.”

This marks the end of a protection program that dates back to 1991, when Somalia’s civil war erupted. President Biden had most recently extended TPS for Somali nationals in September 2024, despite growing concerns about national security and massive welfare fraud rooted in Somali communities.

DHS sources confirmed that 2,471 Somali nationals currently benefit from TPS, with an additional 1,383 applications pending. Approximately 600 of them reside in Minnesota, a state where ICE and DHS have ramped up enforcement operations — and where tensions are already running high.

🚨 BREAKING: The Trump administration just STRIPPED Temporary Protected Status (TPS) from THOUSANDS of Somalis in the US, including the massive Minnesota community!

The decision comes just one day after Minneapolis and St. Paul filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, accusing ICE of targeting the cities for their “diversity” and “differences of opinion.”

Minnesota AG Keith Ellison fumed at a press conference, accusing DHS agents of “sowing chaos and terror.” His words follow the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old woman who allegedly tried to run down federal officers with her car during an ICE operation in South Minneapolis last week.

Noem didn’t mince words, labeling Good a “domestic terrorist” and stating she “weaponized her vehicle” against agents. Bodycam footage reportedly shows Good accelerating toward officers after being ordered to exit the vehicle. She was shot dead on the spot.

🚨 BREAKING: President Trump and Secretary Noem have officially ENDED Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somalis in the United States

Should the Trump administration end TPS for Somalis in the U.S.?

That incident sparked days of rioting and the creation of makeshift barricades by far-left agitators, turning parts of Minneapolis into no-go zones. Despite the unrest, federal immigration operations have continued, drawing outrage from Mayor Jacob Frey, who told ICE to “get the f— out of Minneapolis.”

Gov. Tim Walz slammed the DHS explanation of the shooting as “propaganda,” while refusing to address the criminal element tied to widespread immigration fraud schemes in the state.

But the Trump administration isn’t budging.

The move to end TPS, deport illegal Somali migrants, and crack down on fraud and crime is being hailed by supporters as a long-overdue correction to years of weak enforcement. Critics, on the other hand, are sounding alarms — not about lawbreakers in government programs — but about the supposed trauma caused by enforcing the law itself.

While progressive leaders rail against ICE, block traffic, and threaten lawsuits, DHS has made its position clear: if you’re here illegally, your time is up.
