President Donald Trump spoke by phone with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday, a White House official confirmed, marking a rare direct conversation between the two leaders as U.S.-China relations remain strained on multiple fronts.
According to Fox News, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs released its own readout shortly after the call, stating that the discussion touched on several major international flashpoints, including Taiwan and the ongoing war in Ukraine.
According to the ministry, President Xi used the conversation to reiterate Beijing’s long-standing view on Taiwan, stressing that the island’s future is non-negotiable from China’s perspective.
“President Xi outlined China’s principled position on the Taiwan question. He underscored that Taiwan’s return to China is an integral part of the post-war international order,” the ministry said. It added that Xi invoked the historical partnership between Washington and Beijing, noting that “China and the U.S. fought shoulder to shoulder against fascism and militarism.”
The comments echo Beijing’s broader diplomatic strategy of framing Taiwan’s sovereignty as settled history rather than a matter of contemporary international dispute.
The Trump administration, however, has repeatedly signaled strong support for Taiwan, deepening U.S. engagement with the island and warning China against coercive military or political pressure.
The two leaders also reportedly discussed the conflict in Ukraine — an issue that has complicated Beijing’s global standing due to its continued alignment with Moscow.
While China claims neutrality, U.S. officials have repeatedly raised concerns about Beijing’s economic and diplomatic support for Russia.
Monday’s phone call comes at a sensitive moment for the bilateral relationship, with military tensions around Taiwan increasing and both nations preparing for potential economic and security escalations.
The White House did not immediately release its own detailed summary of the call, leaving questions about what President Trump emphasized during the conversation or whether he issued any warnings regarding China’s posture in the Pacific.
