President-elect Donald Trump has nominated former NFL player Herschel Walker to be the next ambassador to the Bahamas.
Trump made the announcement Tuesday on Truth Social and X, formerly Twitter.
“Herschel has spent decades serving as an Ambassador to our Nation’s youth, our men and women in the Military, and athletes at home and abroad,” Trump wrote in his post.
“A successful businessman, philanthropist, former Heisman Trophy winner, and NFL Great, Herschel has been a tireless advocate for youth sports. During my First Term, he served as Co-Chair of the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition,” Trump added. “Herschel has traveled to over 400 Military installations around the World, removing the stigma surrounding mental health. He represented the United States at the 1992 Winter Olympics as a member of the U.S. bobsled team.”
In college, Walker was a standout running back at the University of Georgia. As such, he won the Heisman Trophy before continuing to play football in the NFL, per The Hill.
In 2022, he failed to unseat incumbent Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) in the Georgia Senate race.
Trump backed Walker in his campaign that was marred by controversies.
