Now that president Donald Trump has the physical Nobel Peace Prize on hand, he now has said, “I don’t care about the Nobel Prize.”
That’s what Trump said while talking with reporters Monday night, adding Norway plays a part on choosing the winner — something the country has vehemently denied, The Hill reported.
“I don’t care about the Nobel Prize,” Trump said.
“First of all, a very fine woman felt that I deserved it and really wanted me to have the Nobel Prize and I appreciate that,” he continued as he referred to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado giving her 18-carat gold medal to Trump last week.
Three Nobel Committee, on turn, stressed that the while the symbols of the prize, a medal and diploma, can be given away, the honor itself is “inseparably linked” to the winner.
Trump has also insisted that Norway plays a part on deciding the winner. Trump linked the prize — and him not getting it — to his plan to annex Greenland.
He expressed has opinions in a letter to Norwegian Prime Minster Jonas Gahr Støre. The president said he no longer felt “an obligation to think purely of Peace.”
“Dear Jonas: Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace, although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America,” the president wrote.
Støre responded Monday by stating the Norwegian government does not have any power on who receives the Peace Prize.
“As regards the Nobel Peace Prize, I have clearly explained, including to President Trump what is well known, the prize is awarded by an independent Nobel Committee and not the Norwegian Government,’ he wrote.
Trump feels otherwise as he spoke with reporters Monday.
“If anybody thinks that Norway doesn’t – doesn’t control the Nobel Prize, they’re just kidding,” he said. “They have a board, but it’s controlled by Norway. And I don’t care what Norway said.”
Watch:
Trump has lobbied to win the Nobel Peace Prize claiming he deserved it because he had helped to end many wars.
“But I really don’t care about [the Nobel Prize],” Trump said Monday. “What I care about is saving lives. And I think I’ve saved tens of millions of lives…we stopped eight wars and maybe we’ll be stopping a ninth very soon, we’ll see.”
