The public is divided on whether former President Donald Trump made a crass joke or was merely telling the truth.
Trump’s comment involves the widow of Corey Comperatore, the man who was killed during the attempt on Trump’s life in Butler, Pennsylvania, July 13.
While at a rally in Harrisburg, Trump said a friend of his gave Helen Comperatore a check for $1 million raised by crowd fundraising effort, HuffPost reported.
“But you know what?” Trump said. “Corey’s wife said, ‘I’d rather have my husband.’”
“Isn’t that good?” he asked. “I know a lot of wives that would not say that, I’m sorry. They would not say that.”
The audience laughed in response to Trump’s statement.
“But no, it’s a great family, he was a great man, he was a brave man,” said Trump.
Posters on X, formerly Twitter, were divided by Trump’s comments — some saying he made light of Comperatore’s death.
