Two U.S. soldiers were left dead and 12 others were injured after an Army transport vehicle was flipped on Monday.

Seventeen soldiers from the 11th Airborne Division had been traveling in a “light medium tactical vehicle” that was used for troop support, on their way to a training exercise near Salcha Alaska, John Pennell, a spokesman with the U.S. Army Alaska told the New York Times.

“The entire 11th Airborne Division is in mourning now for these two soldiers, these two young men that we’ve lost,” Pennell said. “We’re dedicated to ensuring that their families are taken care of and working with those who were injured to get them back on their feet.”

Around 11 a.m. the driver of the vehicle lost control and ended up flipping the vehicle on a dirt road within the Yukon Training Area, Pennell said.

The injured soldiers were taken to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital and as of Monday evening, they had not been released.

Pennell noted that the names of the deceased individuals would be released 24 hours after their families had been notified.

An investigation surrounding the incident is ongoing.

IJR reached out to the 11th Airborne Division for a statement but did not receive a response back.
