Democratic Virginia state Sen. L. Louise Lucas ripped into fellow party Sens. Tim Kaine and Mark Warner over redistricting in the commonwealth, declaring Saturday she didn’t need advice from “a cuck chair in the corner.”

With the 2026 midterm elections approaching, redistricting plans have surfaced in both Republican-led and Democrat-led state legislatures as a strategy to achieve a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. Virginia Senate Democrats on Friday approved a state constitutional amendment allowing the General Assembly to redraw the state’s congressional districts mid-decade. Touting the win online, Lucas first posted a picture of a McDonald’s worker asking, “Would you like fries with that?” on the news of the approved amendment.

In a second post, Lucas called out both Warner and Kaine, telling them how they should be “focused on the fascist” in the White House and leave redistricting to the local government.

“I have the utmost respect for Senator Kaine and Senator Warner but we do not need ‘coaching’ on redistricting coming from a cuck chair in the corner. How about you all stay focused on the fascist in the White House and let us handle redistricting in Virginia. 10-1,” Lucas posted.

The Virginia Senate voted 21-18 along party lines to advance a mid-decade redistricting amendment just three days into the 2026 session, the Virginia Mercury reported. Democrat Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell, said the move came reluctantly in reaction to partisan map changes unfolding in other states, according to the outlet. With Virginia now pushing forward, Democratic lawmakers aim to draw new maps that could deliver a ten Democrats-to-one Republican split in the state’s 11-member U.S. House delegation, which is currently six to five in favor of Democrats.

Prior to the vote, Kaine appeared on “Punchbowl News” stating that, while he strongly supports his state’s party in opposing Trump, he did express “skittishness” to the aggressive plan.

Kaine stated that some might not like the idea of a ten-to-one plan due to potentially running the risk of losing some seats and the potential of losing the referendum due to the need to show voters the maps. Instead, the senator suggested the maps may work better as nine Democrats to two Republicans.

Should Virginia Democrats proceed with mid-decade redistricting plans?

Discussions over redistricting in Virginia ramped up in 2025 after Texas Republicans announced plans for new congressional maps that could add five GOP seats ahead of the 2026 midterms. Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom soon followed with Proposition 50, which was later voter approved, redrawing the state’s congressional maps and potentially dropping the state’s GOP congressional delegation from nine to as few as four.

In response to the Democratic advance, Vice President J.D. Vance slammed Republican Indiana state Sen. Rodric Bray on X, arguing the Hoosier State GOP’s December 2025 decision to block redistricting helped pave the way for Virginia’s aggressive play.

“I’d like to thank @bray_rodric for not even trying to fight back against this extraordinary Democrat abuse of power. Now the votes of Indiana Republicans will matter far less than the votes of Virginia Democrats. We told you it would happen, and you did nothing,” Vance wrote.

Before the General Assembly can draw the maps and put the new proposal on the ballot, it must be approved by the newly inaugurated Democratic Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger, according to the Virginia Mercury.

Warner and Kaine’s offices did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
