A quiet moment on a downtown Seattle street turned into a life-altering nightmare for a 75-year-old woman, after an unprovoked attack left her permanently blinded and stunned a city already grappling with repeat violent crime.
According to the New York Post, Jeanette Marken was standing near the King County Courthouse earlier this month, waiting to cross the street, when a man allegedly approached her from behind and struck her in the head with a wooden board.
The weapon, police say, was embedded with bolts and screws.
The blow cost Marken her eye.
Video footage shows the chilling seconds before the attack, with Marken appearing unaware of any danger as she stood at the crosswalk. The suspect is seen walking up behind her before suddenly swinging the board.
Authorities identified the alleged attacker as Fale Vaigalepa Pea, 42, a man police say is well known to officers in the area.
After the assault, separate police body-camera footage captured officers reacting as they moved in to arrest the suspect.
“Is that Fale Pea?” one officer can be heard asking on the recording.
“He’s notorious for random assaults on Third [Avenue],” another officer replied.
Investigators say Marken was struck without warning or provocation. The force of the blow caused catastrophic injuries, leaving her permanently blind in one eye.
The attack unfolded just steps from a major courthouse in broad daylight — a detail that has fueled renewed concern over public safety in Seattle’s downtown core.
Marken rushed for medical treatment following the attack. The full extent of her recovery remains unclear, but authorities confirmed her vision loss is permanent.
The case has drawn outrage from residents who say random violence has become increasingly common in the city’s busiest corridors. Many pointed to the footage as evidence of how quickly an ordinary moment can turn violent — and how vulnerable pedestrians can be.
While police have not released additional details about what may have motivated the alleged attack, they emphasized that Marken was targeted at random.
Pea was taken into custody and faces charges related to the assault. Prosecutors have not yet detailed how they plan to proceed, but the severity of the injuries is expected to play a central role in the case.
For Marken, the consequences are already irreversible. What began as a routine wait to cross the street ended with the loss of an eye — and a renewed spotlight on the dangers facing Seattle’s streets.
