Winsome Sears Shares the Importance of Parents Talking to Their Children About God

Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears (R) opened up about her faith in God and why parents need to involve their children.

In an interview with the Christian Post, Earle-Sears, 59, spoke about her new memoir, “How Sweet It Is: Defending the American Dream,” released on Aug. 22. In the book, she revealed she and her husband read daily devotionals together with their children.

Earle-Sears explained the importance of Christian parents being “deeply involved in their children’s spiritual practices” throughout the week.

“Well, if all they ever have — and that goes for we adults as well — if all we ever have is the Sunday morning worship and then for the next six days we don’t really have that devotional with the Lord, that alone time with the Lord, where we talk with Him and we read His words, then we are really limping into church come Sunday morning,” she said.

She added, “We have not spiritually fed ourselves. And if we did that in the natural world, where we only ate one day on Sunday and we never did it again, then you see it’s the same principle.”

Furthermore, Earle-Sears said, we need “our own personal faith.”

She shared:

“As they say, ‘God doesn’t have grandchildren.’ So, we have to have our children have their own faith. Why do you believe? What do you believe? Do you know this God that we take you to every day? You have to make this decision for yourself if He will be your God or He won’t. And so, that’s why we made sure to talk with them and have these devotionals with them every day.”

In the interview, Earle-Sears also revealed why she believes politicians are afraid to talk about “the spiritual world,” which is something she also noted in her book, according to the outlet.

“Well, because politicians are trying to be everything to everybody and we can’t. I mean, even in our family, we can’t be all things to them. So, we know the truth that we know,” she said.

Earle-Sears declared, “If we claim to be a Christian, then we have to act like it.”

“Either we believe in this God or we don’t. Jesus said, ‘If you are ashamed of me before men, then I will be ashamed of you before my Father,'” she continued.

Additionally, Sears said she believes we all “instinctively” know there is more beyond this life.

“It can’t just be we’re here and then we’re dead, never to be heard from again. There’s got to be something beyond this,” she explained.

“Otherwise, what are we doing this for? That means we’re just born waiting to die,” she shared.
