A shocking and tragic incident just outside Washington, D.C., has taken a grim turn after the U.S. State Department confirmed that the man accused of carrying out a deadly mass stabbing was one of its own employees.

The Daily Caller reported that 32-year-old Jared Llamado of McLean, Virginia, was actively employed by the State Department at the time of Sunday’s violent confrontation. According to a department spokesperson, Llamado served as a Foreign Service officer and worked as a diplomatic technology officer beginning in September 2024. His role reportedly involved handling information technology systems and software applications tied to diplomatic functions.

The violence unfolded Sunday afternoon on Interstate 495 in Fairfax County. Virginia State Police responded to reports of road rage when a trooper allegedly encountered Llamado wielding a knife. Authorities say four victims had already been stabbed during the chaos.

The situation quickly escalated.

Police say the trooper shot Llamado in self-defense. He was transported to a nearby hospital but later died from his injuries.

The stabbing claimed the life of 39-year-old Michelle Adams. A dog was also killed during the attack. Three additional victims were rushed to local hospitals with serious injuries. Their current conditions have not been publicly detailed.

What the heck is going on with our State department? He stabbed one person to death and her dog. Completely unhinged once again and employed by the government.

The State Department acknowledged the tragedy in a statement, saying it is “aware of the tragic incident that involved a Foreign Service officer” and is extending its “deepest condolences to all those affected by this tragedy.” Officials directed all further questions about the investigation to Virginia State Police.

Authorities emphasized that the incident is not believed to be terrorism-related, addressing early concerns from the community given the suspect’s federal employment and the proximity to the nation’s capital.

Still, the disturbing facts raise serious questions.

A State Department employee. A violent road rage encounter. Multiple stabbings on a major interstate highway. A fatal police shooting.

Investigators are continuing to piece together what led to the initial crash and the confrontation that followed. Virginia State Police confirmed that both the shooting and the circumstances surrounding the crash remain under active investigation.

The Daily Caller has reported that it is continuing to dig for answers as details emerge.

For now, a community is grieving, a federal agency is facing scrutiny, and yet another senseless act of violence has left families shattered. The full story behind what triggered Sunday’s deadly rampage remains unclear — but officials say more information will be released as the investigation moves forward.
