Um ator (masculino/gênero neutro), ou uma atriz (feminino), é uma pessoa que representa um personagem em uma produção. O ator se apresenta "em carne e osso" no meio tradicional do teatro ou em mídias modernas como cinema, rádio e televisão. O termo grego análogo é ὑποκριτής (hupokritḗs), literalmente "um que responde". A interpretação do ator de um papel — a arte de atuar refere-se ao papel desempenhado, seja baseado em uma pessoa real ou em um personagem fictício. Isso também pode ser considerado um "papel de ator", que foi assim chamado devido aos pergaminhos usados nos teatros. A interpretação ocorre mesmo quando o ator está "interpretando a si mesmo", como em algumas formas de arte performática experimental.
