Background and release
From the age of eight, Doja Cat lived in an ashram commune founded and led by jazz musician Alice Coltrane in the Santa Monica Mountains of Agoura Hills, California. It was here where she lived and practiced Hinduism for four years, also gaining interest in a style of Indian classical dance called Bharatanatyam. She claims that while at the ashram she felt like she could not be "a normal kid who went skating and ate cheeseburgers." The behavioural disorder agoraphobia is characterized by symptoms of anxiety in situations where the person perceives their environment to be unsafe with no easy way to escape.
The existence of the song was confirmed after Doja Cat shared titles of potential tracks on Scarlet in April 2023. On September 3, 2023, she shared a post on Instagram featuring her and several female models at a music video shoot, under which her styling assistant Malia Rusher commented "they aren't ready for agora". The tracklist for Scarlet was revealed on September 12, with "Agora Hills" as the ninth track. On September 20, a snippet of the song was shared on her official website, and the release date was confirmed to be September 22.
