Pope Alexander IV, born Rinaldo di Jenne, was head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from 12 December 1254 to his death in 1261. In 1255, Alexander IV canonized Saint Clare of Assisi, founder of the religious order for women called the Poor Clares.
