Americanos são os cidadãos e nacionais dos Estados Unidos. A lei federal dos EUA não equipara nacionalidade com raça ou etnia, mas sim com cidadania. Os EUA têm 37 grupos de ascendência com mais de um milhão de indivíduos. Os americanos brancos formam o maior grupo racial e étnico em 61,6% da população dos EUA, com brancos não hispânicos representando 57,8% da população. Os americanos hispânicos e latinos formam o segundo maior grupo e são 18,7% da população americana. Os americanos negros constituem o terceiro maior grupo de ascendência do país e são 12,4% da população total dos EUA. Os americanos asiáticos são o quarto maior grupo do país, compondo 6% da população americana. Os 3,7 milhões de nativos americanos do país representam cerca de 1,1%, e cerca de 574 tribos nativas são reconhecidas pelo governo federal. Pessoas de descendência americana podem ser encontradas internacionalmente. Estima-se que até sete milhões de americanos estejam vivendo no exterior, e constituem a diáspora americana.
