Archway is an area of north London, England, in the London Borough of Islington 3.8 miles (6 km) north of Charing Cross. It straddles the A1 and its name derives ultimately from the use by the promoters of the road in 1810 of "archway" in preference to "tunnel" for the subterranean passage through the crest of the hill. The tunnel collapsed during construction and was replaced by a cutting with a bridge over it. This bridge became known as Archway Bridge. The area has a modern commercial hub around Vantage Point and Archway tube station.
