Bashar Hafez al-Assad es un expolítico sirio, médico y oficial militar que ejerció como presidente de Siria desde 2000 hasta su derrocamiento en 2024 tras la guerra civil siria. Como presidente, Assad fue comandante en jefe de las Fuerzas Armadas Árabes Sirias y secretario general del Comando Central del Partido Baaz Socialista Árabe. Es hijo de Hafez al-Assad, quien gobernó Siria de 1970 a 2000.
