Life
Gurdon fue el hijo menor de Brampton Gurdon, de Letton, Norfolk (quien era sobrino de John Gurdon), por su esposa Elizabeth, hija de Francis Thornhagh, de Fenton, Nottinghamshire. Su hermano mayor fue Thornhagh Gurdon (1663 – November 1733), el anticuario inglés. Gurdon fue admitido a los 15 años en Caius College, Cambridge, en 1687, y se graduó B.A. en 1691 y M.A. en 1695.
