Clare Marx

Dame Clare Lucy Marx (15 March 1954 – 27 November 2022) was a British surgeon who was president of the Royal College of Surgeons of England from July 2014 to July 2017, the first woman to hold the position, and former chair of the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management. From January 2019 until July 2021, Dame Clare was chair of the General Medical Council, the first woman appointed to that role. She had worked as an orthopaedic surgeon at Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust from 1993. Personal life Marx was born in Coventry on 15 March 1954, the daughter of Francis Ulrich Marx, a German industrial chemist, and Brenda (Johnston) Marx, a teacher and magistrate. She grew up in Warwick and, later, Cheltenham. She decided to become a doctor after a work experience placement at Coventry Hospital. She wed Andrew William Mildmay Fane, son of Major Robert William Augustus Fane and Elinor Valerie (Borthwick) Fane, in 1989.
