El sentido común es "conocimiento, juicio y gusto que es más o menos universal y que se posee más o menos sin reflexión ni argumento". Como tal, a menudo se considera que representa el nivel básico de juicio práctico sensato o conocimiento de hechos básicos que cualquier ser humano adulto debería poseer. Es "común" en el sentido de ser compartido por casi todas las personas. Los términos relevantes de otros idiomas utilizados en tales discusiones incluyen el latín antes mencionado, que a su vez traduce el griego antiguo κοινὴ αἴσθησις, y el francés bon sens. Sin embargo, estos no son traducciones directas en todos los contextos, y en inglés se han desarrollado diferentes matices de significado. En contextos filosóficos y científicos, desde la Ilustración el término "sentido común" se ha utilizado con fines retóricos tanto de manera aprobatoria como desaprobatoria. Por un lado, ha sido un estándar de buen gusto, buen juicio y fuente de axiomas científicos y lógicos.
