David fue un noble búlgaro, hermano del emperador Samuel y el hijo mayor de komes Nicholas, miembro de la dinastía Cometopuli. Después de la desastrosa invasión de los ejércitos de la Rus' y la caída del noreste de Bulgaria bajo ocupación bizantina en 971, él y sus tres hermanos menores asumieron el liderazgo de la defensa del país. Ejercían su poder juntos y cada uno gobernaba y defendía una región separada. Gobernó las partes más meridionales del reino desde Prespa y Kastoria y fue responsable de la defensa de las peligrosas fronteras con Tesalónica y Tesalia. En 976 participó en el principal asalto contra el Imperio Bizantino pero fue asesinado por valacos errantes entre Prespa y Kostur.
