Desnudo excepto por el casco y las botas, es famoso como la primera obra de pie sin soporte fundida en bronce durante el Renacimiento, y la primera escultura masculina desnuda independiente realizada desde la antigüedad. Representa a David con una sonrisa enigmática, posada con su pie sobre la cabeza cercenada de Goliat justo después de derrotar al gigante. El joven está completamente desnudo, aparte de un sombrero rematado con laurel y botas, y sostiene la espada de Goliat.
