Durante a Guerra dos Bôeres, ele esteve encarregado do Edinburgh South African Hospital, uma experiência que o impressionou sobre a importância do movimento da Cruz Vermelha em reduzir e mitigar os horrores da guerra. Tornando-se ativo na British Red Cross Society, ele foi fundamental na formação da filial de Edimburgo e foi seu Presidente por mais de 30 anos. Ele foi nomeado cavaleiro em 1920 e eleito Presidente do Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh em 1921.
