La palabra diseño se refiere a algo que es o ha sido creado intencionalmente por un agente pensante, y a veces se usa para referirse a la naturaleza inherente de algo – su diseño. El verbo diseñar expresa el proceso de desarrollar un diseño. En algunos casos, la construcción directa de un objeto sin un plan previo explícito también puede considerarse un diseño, como en las artes y manualidades. Se espera que un diseño tenga un propósito dentro de un contexto específico, típicamente con el objetivo de satisfacer ciertas metas y restricciones mientras se tienen en cuenta consideraciones estéticas, funcionales y experienciales. Los ejemplos tradicionales de diseños son dibujos arquitectónicos e ingenieriles, diagramas de circuitos, patrones de costura y artefactos menos tangibles como modelos de procesos de negocio.
