Un dictador es un líder político que posee poder absoluto. Una dictadura se define como un estado gobernado por un dictador. La palabra se originó como el título de un dictador romano elegido por el Senado romano para gobernar la república en tiempos de emergencia. Al igual que los términos "tirano" y "autócrata", dictador pasó a usarse casi exclusivamente como un término no titular para el gobierno opresivo. En el uso moderno, el término dictador se usa generalmente para describir a un líder que posee o abusa de una cantidad extraordinaria de poder personal.
