Efficient fue hijo del destacado padre Zabeel de la yegua Refused The Dance por Defensive Play (USA). Es medio hermano de Guillotine, ganador del MVRC Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes de 2008. En su primera campaña en la primavera de 2006 logró cinco victorias consecutivas, incluyendo el Group 2 Aami Vase en Moonee Valley y culminando con una victoria en el VRC Derby por 2½ cuerpos. Tras su victoria en el Derby, Efficient fue inscripto en la Melbourne Cup, que se corría tres días después.
