Ether fue un proyecto de música experimental de John Watts, lanzado bajo el nombre Fischer-Z. Después de publicar dos álbumes exitosos como solista y un álbum de remezclas, desde el último álbum de Fischer-Z, Stream, John Watts había comenzado a interesarse en crear música big beat. Después de crear un álbum completo de estilo big beat en 1999 titulado Bigbeatpoetry, Watts continuó en un estilo similar para Ether. Grabó varias canciones, con solo su guitarra y voz, y luego las puso sobre beats cortados como pista rítmica. Watts también había añadido un toque cinematográfico al proyecto; viajó por Europa y por la Nueva York posterior al 11-S para encontrar músicos al azar y grabarlos usando su laptop, en sus casas y en la calle. Sarah Vermeersch filmó y editó el proceso en una road movie. Ether se lanzó además como álbum solista de John Watts, incluyendo el DVD de la road movie y un CD de temas del álbum Ether que aparecieron en la película.
