La banda se formó en 1993 por el guitarrista y compositor Carl Bell, el vocalista Brett Scallions, el baterista Jody Abbott, el tecladista Erik Avakian y el bajista Jeff Abercrombie. Después de varios lanzamientos independientes, la banda firmó con 550 Music y Epic Records para lanzar su álbum de estudio debut Sunburn (1998), el cual fue apoyado por su primer sencillo exitoso, "Shimmer".
