Golden fica ao longo de Clear Creek na base da Front Range das Montanhas Rochosas. Fundada durante a corrida do ouro de Pike's Peak em 16 de junho de 1859, o acampamento de mineração foi originalmente chamado de Golden City em homenagem a Thomas L. Golden. Golden City serviu como a capital do Território provisório de Jefferson de 1860 a 1861, e capital do Território oficial de Colorado de 1862 a 1867. Em 1867, a capital territorial foi transferida cerca de 12 milhas (19 km) a leste para Denver City. Golden agora faz parte da Área Estatística Metropolitana de Denver-Aurora-Centennial, CO e do Corredor Urbano da Front Range.
