Hammurabi, también escrito Hammurapi, fue el sexto rey amorita de Babilonia, reinando desde c. 1792 a. C. hasta c. 1750 a. C. Fue precedido por su padre, Sin-Muballit, quien abdicó debido a problemas de salud. Durante su reinado, conquistó las ciudades-estado de Larsa, Eshnunna y Mari. Destituyó a Ishme-Dagan I, gobernante del Reino de la Alta Mesopotamia, llevando casi toda Mesopotamia bajo el dominio babilónico.
