Lieutenant-General Hugh Mackay was a Scottish army officer. In 1660, Mackay was commissioned into the Scots Army's Douglas' Regiment, spending the next few years in England and France, then volunteered to serve in the Venetian army during the Cretan War. Following service in the Third Anglo-Dutch War and Franco-Dutch War, In 1673, he joined the Scots Brigade, a long established mercenary unit of the Dutch States Army. He served with the brigade for the rest of his career.
