Na política, ajuda humanitária e ciências sociais, a fome é definida como uma condição na qual um indivíduo não tem a capacidade física ou financeira de consumir alimento suficiente para atender às necessidades nutricionais básicas por um período prolongado. No campo do alívio da fome, o termo fome é usado em um sentido que vai além do desejo típico por comida que todos os humanos experimentam, também referido como apetite. O tipo mais grave de fome é quando a desnutrição é generalizada, e quando as pessoas começam a morrer de inanição por falta de acesso a alimento suficiente e nutritivo, isso resulta em uma declaração de fome.
