"I'm Not Okay (I Promise)" is a pop-punk, emo, and emo pop song, conceived and recorded after the A&R man Craig Aaronson and the producer Howard Benson found a vocal line in a previously recorded demo, and urged the group to build it into a complete song. The track was written by band members Frank Iero, Matt Pelissier, Ray Toro, Gerard Way, and Mikey Way, and was produced by Benson.
