Idiot era anteriormente un término técnico en contextos legales y psiquiátricos para algunos tipos de discapacidad intelectual profunda donde la edad mental es de dos años o menos, y la persona no puede protegerse contra los peligros físicos comunes. El término fue reemplazado gradualmente por "retraso mental profundo", que desde entonces ha sido reemplazado por otros términos.
